The Dark Ages were a time in European history from which little or no information survives.
This tournament celebrates the warriors of the Vikings, the Normans, the Saxon and the Dane. Warriors about whom we know little concerning their styles of combat or martial endeavour beyond the legends and sagas that have come down to us through history.
The Dark Ages competition is a heavy tournament, fought in full combat kit with metal helmets to protect the head. Dark Age warriors from all over New Zealand will be pitted against one another with sword and shield in the ‘holmgang' style until there is one clear winner. That fighter will be awarded the prize for Dark Age Champion, 2010.
