LIVING HISTORY

Living History is important. It's what answers the question "What was it really like?"  This is where attention to detail really pays off.

The encampments on display at the Tournament have been lovingly re-created by hand from painstaking and detailed research, and to honour this exceptional dedication, we present the Living History Prize for the best encampment.

This prize is based on quality, not scale. The Living History prize is awarded not only to the campsite, but also to the people in it. Authentic campers will wear accurate historical costume at all times while in their camp and will display a high degree of attention to detail in all things.

Voting in this competition is left to the event-going public. Participating campsites in the Medieval Village will have a small letterbox placed near them, a vote is cast for that group by placing an entry ticket into that box. At the end of the weekend, the votes are counted and the winner receives the prize. The Public are encouraged to ask questions and get close to history.

In 2008 the Living History Prize was won by the New Zealand Norsemen . In 2009 the Norsemen and the Romans of Legio II Augusta shared the glory. Both sides will once again be a force to be reckoned with in this hotly contested competition.
